The European Union announced a package of countermeasures to retaliate against the US steel and aluminum tariffs

After the steel and aluminum tariffs imposed by the United States on the European Union took effect on the 12th, the European Union announced a package of countermeasures, preparing to impose retaliatory tariffs on a total value of 26 billion euros of US exports to Europe.

According to the announcement issued by the European Commission on the same day, the EU's retaliatory tariffs on the United States will be divided into two steps, the first step is to restore the retaliatory tariffs imposed in 2018 and 2020 in response to the US steel and aluminum tariffs in the year, covering US ships, motorcycles and even bourbon whiskey, involving a total value of about 8 billion euros.

The second step is that from mid-April, after consultations with stakeholders and EU member states, retaliatory tariffs will be imposed on more US exports to Europe, covering US beef, seafood, dairy products, home appliances, textiles and other products, with a total value of about 18 billion euros.

According to the announcement, the total value of US exports to Europe involved in the EU retaliatory tariffs is about 26 billion euros, which is the same as the total value of EU exports to the United States involved in the current round of US steel and aluminum tariffs, and is about 5% of the EU's total exports to the United States.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said in a statement that the U.S. steel and aluminum tariffs on the EU are equivalent to a tax on its own nationals, which is bad for businesses, worse for consumers, and will disrupt supply chains. The EU will take "strong and proportionate" countermeasures to protect the rights of EU consumers and businesses.

She also said that the imposition of tariffs will increase the economic burden on both sides and is not in line with the common interests of Europe and the United States. The EU is ready to engage in negotiations and dialogue with the United States to find a better solution.

In February, U.S. President Donald Trump signed a document announcing a 25 percent tariff on all U.S. steel and aluminum imports, saying there would be "no exceptions." On March 12, the steel and aluminum tariffs officially took effect.

In addition to the steel and aluminum tariffs, Trump also signed a memorandum in February this year, deciding to impose "reciprocal tariffs" on US trading partners to reduce the United States "large and persistent goods trade deficit." In response, the EU said the United States was breaking binding international trade commitments and that the EU would respond "firmly and promptly" to unjustified U.S. tariffs.
