The United States: Tariffs will be imposed on steel-made household appliances starting from the 23rd, including washing machines and refrigerators

According to CCTV News, on June 12 local time, the US Department of Commerce announced that it would impose additional tariffs on a variety of steel-made household appliances starting from June 23, including "steel-derived products" such as dishwashers, washing machines and refrigerators.

According to the notice issued by the Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS) of the US Department of Commerce, this tariff adjustment has added eight major categories of household appliances and related products to "steel derivatives", uniformly applying a 50% tariff rate. The taxable amount will be calculated based on the value of the steel components contained in various products.

Since the current Trump administration implemented aggressive trade policies, the prices of many types of products have risen due to the increase in tariffs. The latest notice is a rare move by the US government this year to explicitly impose tariffs on daily consumer goods. It is expected that this will further push up the cost of living for American families.

Xia Yuchen, founder and managing director of New Hongrui Investment Management in the UK, told Yicai Global that populist politics is expected to bring about continuous instability, and the current policies of the US government are evolving from market regulators to sources of market volatility. Since April 2nd, a series of policies of the Trump administration have had an irreversible impact on the confidence of domestic and foreign enterprises and investors in the United States. He said.

The new notice to expand the list of taxable products marks the second time that the Trump administration has expanded the scope of taxable products since it raised tariffs on imported steel and aluminum in March.

On February 10th this year, Trump announced that the steel and aluminum tariffs would be set at 25% starting from March 12th. Before this round of tariffs took effect, the US Department of Commerce included about 300 kinds of steel-related products in the tax list, including various industrial products such as horseshoes and bulldozer blades. On June 3rd, Trump issued a new executive order, raising the tax rate on steel and aluminum to 50% and authorizing the US Department of Commerce to include more steel-containing products within the scope of taxation.

At the Ministry of Commerce's press conference earlier this month, He Yongqian, a spokesperson for the Ministry of Commerce, said that China has repeatedly emphasized that the 232 tariff is a typical act of unilateralism and protectionism and has long been ruled by the World Trade Organization's dispute settlement mechanism as a violation of WTO rules. This time, the US side has once again raised tariffs on steel, aluminum and their derivative products. This not only harms others and itself, but also fails to help maintain industrial security. Moreover, it will seriously disrupt the stability of the global industrial and supply chains.

In the latest notice, BIS has added eight types of household appliances and related products as "steel derivatives", specifically including modular refrigerators/freezers; Small and large dryers; Washing machine Dishwasher Horizontal and vertical freezers; Cooking stoves, cooktops and ovens; Food waste disposer Welding metal frames, etc.

The notice also explains the calculation method of the tariff, that is, it is evaluated based on the value of the steel content of each product. For instance, if the total value of a dishwasher is $1,000 and the value of its steel components (such as the internal frame or casing) is $200, the tariff to be levied is 50% of the $200, which is $100.

The new regulation applies to goods entering the country or being picked up from the warehouse after 12:01 a.m. Eastern Time on June 23, 2025. However, this policy also sets an exception clause. If the product uses steel raw materials cast in the United States, it can enjoy tax exemption even if the processing is completed overseas.
