MSC Became the Biggest Liner Company in the World
According to the latest data from Alphaliner, MSC ranked first among the top 100 global liner companies in terms of transport capacity, that is, on January 6, 2022, MSC officially surpassed Maersk to become the world's largest liner company.
As of January 6, 2022, among the top 100 Alphaliner global liner companies, Mediterranean Shipping ranked first, Maersk Shipping ranked second, Dafei Shipping ranked third, COSCO Shipping ranked fourth, Herbert ranked fifth, ONE ranked sixth, EVA Shipping ranked seventh, HMM ranked eighth, Yang Ming shipping ranked ninth and Wan Hai Shipping ranked tenth.
According to the data, as of January 6, Mediterranean Shipping operated 645 container ships, with a total capacity of 4284728TEU, accounting for 17.0% of the global market share. Different from other liner companies that expand their scale through mergers and acquisitions, Mediterranean Shipping completely relies on its own continuous expansion and development.
In recent years, Mediterranean Shipping has shown a strong expansion momentum, not only through the expansion of new large container ships. Since 2020, Mediterranean Shipping has also achieved rapid growth by purchasing 128 second-hand container ships, which is also an unprecedented number in shipping history.
It is expected that in the first quarter of 2022, Mediterranean Shipping will complete its first liner company acquisition, that is, the acquisition of 67% majority equity of Log-In, a Brazilian shipping and logistics company, which will increase the transportation capacity of Mediterranean Shipping by about 150000TEU.
Mediterranean shipping was founded in 1970. It bought a second-hand ship made in Germany from Herbert. After years of vigorous development, it has become a world-famous enterprise group.
According to the data, mediterranean shipping has confirmed nearly 1 million TEU of new shipbuilding orders, which is also the largest among all liner companies, which means that Mediterranean Shipping will further consolidate its position as the world's largest container liner company in the future.
Previously, some media mistakenly claimed that Mediterranean Shipping had occupied the first place at the end of November or mid December 2021. Alphaliner explained that these reports were inaccurate because these sources ignored the time interval from the signing of the agreement to buy second-hand ships to the actual delivery or charter. For the acquisition of 67% majority equity of Log In, the agreement was only approved on December 21, 2021, but the actual acquisition needs to be completed in the first quarter of 2022.
Similarly, since Mediterranean Shipping only controls a 49% minority stake in Linea Messina, its capacity of about 23000TEU is not included in the total capacity of the Mediterranean Shipping.
Mediterranean Shipping is currently the world's largest liner company, including its own ships and chartered ships. Alphaliner integrates the accommodation of all its operating ships, including those operated by WEC Lines and Medlog.
Alphaliner explained that in fact, in 2022, Mediterranean Shipping received several second-hand ships purchased last year, narrowing the gap with Maersk. These include MSC ADA f (ex ADAM PEARL) of 1118TEU, MSC MANASA F (ex ALION) of 1087TEU and MSC GIADA III (ex SCIO SKY) of 2732TEU. The final realization exceeded the 4992TEU's Mexico, which was under Maersk's lease. Mediterranean Shipping purchased the ship from XT Shipping, a non operating owner, for USD$50.5 million in June 2021. Mexico arrived at the Singapore anchorage on December 30, 2021, handed it over to Mediterranean Shipping a few days later, and changed its name to MSC Mexico in the early morning of January 6, 2022.
In the next few weeks, the capacity gap between Mediterranean Shipping and Maersk may change. Theoretically, the fluctuation of capacity caused by starting charter and returning ships may lead Maersk to rank first again temporarily, but with the delivery of new shipbuilding, It is expected that Mediterranean Shipping will become the world's No. 1 on the list of Alphaliner's top 100 global liner companies in the first half of 2022 or even longer.
However, it is worth mentioning that as early as 2018, s ø Ren Skou, CEO of Maersk, and COSCO Shipping executives publicly said that the fleet expansion of shipping companies should keep pace with market growth, rather than blindly pursuing the ranking of global transport capacity.
According to the shipping industry network, with a series of consolidation, mergers and acquisitions, bankruptcy and reorganization of the container liner industry in 2016, the total capacity of the top ten shipping companies in the global container liner industry will account for 84.7% of the global total capacity by 2021.
In addition, in terms of the proportion of the total transportation capacity in the global centralized transportation market, the total transportation capacity of 2M alliance among the three major alliances accounts for 34%; Ocean Alliance accounted for 30.1%; THE alliance accounted for 18.9%.
