A world first! The Shanghai shipping company completed the installation of carbon capture system for large container ships

The world's first large container ship Carbon capture system (CCS) retrofitting project undertaken by Shanghai CR Dandong Shipping Engineering Co., LTD., a joint-stock enterprise of China State Shipbuilding Corporation Hudong Zhonghua Shipbuilding (Group) Co., LTD. - the 14,000TEU large container ship "Long Top" under Evergreen Shipping has been running stably after trial inspection and more than two months of navigation verification. Carbon dioxide comprehensive capture rate of more than 80%, analysis of carbon dioxide purity of more than 99%, fully meet the International Maritime Organization (IMO) long-term decarbonization strategic objectives, so that this 10 years old large box ship gorgeous transformation into a new green low-carbon environmental protection ship.

It is reported that after more than 3 months of overcoming difficulties and continuous installation, commissioning and verification, the world's first large container ship CCS conversion project was successfully completed in China Resources Dadong. The newly decorated "Long Top" ship has left the dock of Huarun Dadong Shipyard in Chongming Island, Shanghai, and returned to operation to open a new voyage.

This is a successful case in which China Resources Dadong and Evergreen Shipping have joined forces to help the shipping industry achieve its low-carbon goals. It is understood that the decarbonization system used in the refit project was independently developed, designed and built by Qiyao Environmental Protection Company, a leading company in the industry. The system involves a number of professional technical fields, among which the advanced organic amine cycle adsorption technology is the use of chemical adsorption between organic amine and carbon dioxide to separate carbon dioxide from the mixed gas emitted by the ship's main engine, which has a wide range of application value and market prospects.

As the world's leading ship repair enterprise, China Resources Dadong faces the challenges of the world's first large container ship CCS conversion project, both at the technical and management levels. Based on the "long top" wheel is a "double island" design, the project technical team, after scientific consideration and repeated tradeoffs, flexibly installed the carbon capture main equipment in the back half of the No. 9 cabin, so that it can maximize the use of limited space, but also can be seamlessly connected with the relevant power equipment, and easy to construction. This innovative scheme has been recognized by shipowners.

According to the engineering requirements, the desulfurization tower and carbon capture system must be installed in the prefabricated tower section in advance. In the construction of key nodes such as tower hoisting, tilt test and equipment power-on, many challenges come one after another. All departments, relevant workshops and construction teams of CR Dadong work together to continuously optimize production plans and process control to ensure the orderly progress of each project. Especially in the tilt test stage, the epoxy base of the C-type tank must be installed in advance, which is the first time in the history of CRR Dadong ship repair.

The best construction season for the installation of this project is summer, and it will inevitably encounter insulation problems to complete it in winter. Until this problem is solved, construction cannot continue. The technical team of China Resources Dadong Project and the epoxy service provider repeatedly studied and demonstrated, discussed the construction steps, and finally worked out a feasible construction plan and successfully installed it at one time. The results show that the epoxy base installation all meet the design requirements and ship inspection and acceptance standards, finally overcome the problem of insulation, and lay a solid foundation for the subsequent project.

On the low-carbon road, China Resources Dadong has made a series of remarkable achievements. In 2021, the company spent eight months to complete the world's first 15,000TEU large container ship "Sajir" LNG bunker new production and LNG power conversion project.

In September 2023, the air lubrication system modification of the Norwegian shipowner's 83,500 DWT bulk carrier "Ballard" was completed.

In December 2023, the Japanese shipowner Mitsui completed the first sail column modification ship "Princess Udo" that uses wind to propel the ship's navigation.

In March 2024, it also undertook the modification of the rotor sail of the wind-driven ship sailing of the French ship owner's chemical tanker "Ac Anna", and the project is progressing smoothly. It is reported that the installation of the wheel sail equipment is expected to save 20% of the fuel consumption of the ship.
