The country will impose tariffs of up to 200% on Chinese goods!
According to Hong Kong TV reported on June 29, Indonesian Trade Minister Zulkivli Hassan said on the same day that Indonesia plans to impose 100%-200% import duties on Chinese-made footwear, clothing, textiles, cosmetics and ceramics.
Why to impose tariffs on Chinese products, the Indonesian trade minister explained that due to the impact of the US-China trade war, China can not import small goods such as clothing, shoes and hats to the United States, a large number of exports to Indonesia sales, they are too cheap, so that Indonesia's small and medium-sized garment processing enterprises to survive becomes difficult, "if we are flooded by (imported goods), Our micro, small and medium-sized enterprises may face closure."
At the end of last year, the Indonesian government enacted a regulation to tighten oversight of more than 3,000 imported goods, ranging from food ingredients to electronics to chemicals. However, the regulation was subsequently withdrawn as domestic industry felt that it was too strict and hindered the flow of required imported materials.
To respond to the concerns of domestic industry and to more precisely protect local industries from imports, the Indonesian government is drafting a new ministerial regulation. The new regulation will focus on sensitive industries such as footwear, clothing, textiles, cosmetics and ceramics, and plans to restrict imports of these goods by imposing high safeguard tariffs.
Budi Santoso, a senior official at Indonesia's Trade Assurance Board, said the tariffs would be implemented soon.
According to statistics Bureau data, Indonesia mainly imports clothing and accessories from China, Vietnam and Bangladesh, which means that these countries may be affected by Indonesia's new tariff policy.
