This country is in a mess! National traffic lockdown! Port traffic is interrupted!
According to foreign media reports, the recent outbreak of violent demonstrations in Bangladesh, due to the nationwide blockade imposed by students in Bangladesh, since Wednesday night, July 17, the passage of trucks carrying goods to Chittagong port and container yard has been suspended.
Logistics across Bangladesh may be disrupted in the near future, please be aware of logistics delays.
The protests have intensified, with protesters demanding the abolition of the country's quota system for "civil servants" and the introduction of merit-based recruitment. Over the past few days, students have blocked roads across the country, paralyzing traffic in large parts of Dhaka and several major cities. As a result, no vehicles are driving on the highway, disrupting the transport of imports and exports.
Arshad Jamal (Dipu), vice president of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), said the highway has been closed since Wednesday night, so any cargo vehicles have not been able to travel from Dhaka to Chittagong port or reach the capital.
"We are very concerned about the situation." He pointed out, adding that "it has become very difficult to deliver export cargoes to Chittagong port". He believes that if the dispute is not resolved soon, the export-oriented industry will face a serious situation.
Nurul Qayyum Khan, president of the Bangladesh Inland Container Yards Association (BICDA), said no trucks had been allowed to enter the warehouse from the factory or head to the port since Thursday morning due to safety reasons.
"Import containers are also not coming out of the port because the drivers are not willing to take risks," he added. "Typically, these yards handle about 4,000 TEU of import and export containers and empty containers per day, which remain suspended for the day."
However, he said the loading and unloading of cargo inside the container yard was underway and boxes would start being sent to the port once the situation normalized. Chittagong officials said container loading and unloading at the port yard was also proceeding as usual, but no boxes were being moved out of the port area due to the road blockade.
