Houthi rebels in Yemen have attacked two more oil tankers

Iranian-backed Houthi forces in Yemen attacked two oil tankers - the Saudi-flagged Amjad and the Panama-flagged Blue Lagoon I - in the Red Sea on Monday, the US military said, according to media reports, calling the attack a "reckless act of terrorism".

Yemen's Houthis responded late on Monday by attacking the Blue Lagoon I with multiple missiles and drones, but made no mention of the Saudi tanker.

The Houthis attacked the tankers with two ballistic missiles and a one-way attack drone system, U.S. Central Command said, and both tankers were hit.

According to a US military statement, both tankers were carrying crude oil, with the Amjad carrying about 2 million barrels of crude oil,

It is reported that the maximum capacity of the Amjad is 2 million barrels of oil. The Blue Lagoon I has a maximum capacity of 1 million barrels of oil.

The two ships were close when they were hit, but were able to continue sailing without causing major damage or casualties, the sources said.

One of the sources said the Amjad was unlikely to be a direct target.

The Joint Maritime Information Center, run by a Western naval alliance, said three ballistic missiles hit the Blue Lagoon I tanker 70 nautical miles northwest of Yemen's northern port of Sarif on Monday.

In a report, the Joint Maritime Information Center said it "assessed that Blue Lagoon I was targeted because other vessels owned by its company had recently docked at Israeli ports." "All crew members on board are safe," the center said. The ship suffered very little damage and does not require assistance."

In November, the Houthis launched their first drone and missile strikes on the waterway. They say they are acting in solidarity with Palestinians under attack during Israel's war on Gaza.

The Gaza war has killed tens of thousands of people, leveled large parts of Gaza and triggered a humanitarian crisis.

Since November, the Houthis have carried out more than 70 attacks in the Red Sea, sinking two ships, hijacking another and killing at least three sailors.
