China once again calls for the safety of the sea lanes in the Red Sea
The United Nations Security Council held an unscheduled meeting on Wednesday to discuss the situation in Yemen in the Middle East, expressing concern over the attack on a Greek oil tanker in the Red Sea and the ongoing flooding in Yemen. Speaking at the meeting, China's Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations Geng Shuang once again called on the Houthi armed forces to respect the navigation rights of merchant ships of various countries in the Red Sea waters in accordance with international law, stop harassing acts, and safeguard the safety of sea lanes in the Red Sea waters
Geng Shuang said that China has always maintained that the resolution of the Yemen issue should rely on political and diplomatic means. Relevant parties should stick to the general direction of political settlement, work towards the same direction, build consensus, jointly advance a comprehensive political process that is "led and owned by the people", and resolve differences and differences through dialogue and negotiation. China supports the mediation efforts of UN Special Envoy for Yemen Grundberg and looks forward to all parties, especially countries with influence on Yemen, playing a constructive role in this regard. China calls on the Yemeni government and the Houthis to jointly promote the implementation of the agreements reached between the two sides on financial and aviation issues.
The Chinese side is concerned about the recent attack on the "Sunion" oil tanker in the Red Sea waters, as well as the possible crude oil spill and potential ecological and environmental impact. All relevant parties should exercise restraint, stop taking actions that escalate tensions and push for the cooling of the situation.
The international community should step up humanitarian assistance to Yemen as several provinces in Yemen are suffering from severe floods and the humanitarian situation has worsened. China expresses grave concern over the detention of UN personnel in Yemen and calls for the immediate and unconditional release of all UN personnel.
Geng stressed that the tension in the Red Sea is a prominent manifestation of the spillover of the Gaza conflict. China once again urges the full implementation of the relevant Security Council resolutions and the immediate realization of a lasting ceasefire in Gaza. China supports the Security Council in taking further actions to end the fighting and save lives. China stands ready to work with all parties to make unremitting efforts for the political settlement of the Yemeni issue and peace and stability in the Middle East.
Hans Grundberg, the UN Secretary-General's Special envoy for Yemen, briefed the conference on the same day, saying that the destabilizing effects of the Gaza conflict are spreading to the wider region, including Yemen. Yemen is facing the effects of devastating rains, floods and landslides, as well as a growing cholera epidemic, said UN Assistant Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs Jose Msuya.
