It took three and a half years! Us round-the-world cruise ship departs after four months of disruption!
The American "Odyssey" cruise ship slowly left the port of Belfast, England, on the night of September 30, leading more than 100 passengers to begin a journey around seven continents that is expected to take 3 and a half years. The ship has been stranded in the region for four months due to numerous maintenance and formalities problems.
According to the British Sky News channel website reported on October 1, the "Odyssey" cruise ship was scheduled to set sail from Belfast, the capital of Northern Ireland, Britain, on May 30, but due to the need for maintenance of rudder, gearbox and other equipment, the cruise ship's departure date has been repeatedly delayed. According to the operator, there were also some procedural problems in the maintenance process, which also delayed a lot of time.
Passengers pay between $99,999 and $899,000, depending on class of cabin and service package. As the cruise ship's detention time became longer and longer, many passengers chose to go home first, but more than 100 people still insisted on waiting. During maintenance, passengers can use onboard facilities during the day, but must stay on shore at night.
Faced with unexpected difficulties, passengers on the cruise ship come up with their own strategies to pass the time.
American couple John and Melody Hennessy spent more than $1 million on their tickets. During the stay, they simply carried out an "in-depth tour" of Belfast and had a lot of fun. Melody said: "We played almost everything in Belfast. Now we know Belfast very well." "We are over the moon," she said, knowing the ship will finally set sail on September 30.
While stranded for four months, American passenger Angie Horshani and Canadian passenger Gian Peroni fell in love. They were inseparable and talked heartily. When asked if the couple would still be holding hands if the cruise ship had not been stranded, Peroni said: "We spend a lot of time together, which accelerates things. [If the cruise ship had not been stranded,] we would not have had the opportunity to spend time alone, but with hundreds of people on board."
The couple plan to marry on a cruise ship in April next year, with the captain officiating. According to the voyage, the cruise ship should have sailed near Panama and Costa Rica at that time.
The moment the cruise set sail on Sept. 30, passengers cheered. Andy Garrison, a passenger, said, "We're all fired up and ready to go! [The wait for the last four months] has been frustrating. But it's great that people are resilient in the process."
