Global share survey: Chinese ships lead, Japanese companies fall out of the top five
According to the "Japan Economic News" website reported on October 8, the "major goods and services share survey" of the global market in 2023 compiled by the "Japan Economic News" shows that China Shipbuilding Group (CSSC) ranked first again in ship construction volume after a year. Imaji Shipbuilding, Japan's largest shipbuilder, which ranked third in the previous survey, fell out of the top five.
According to the report, global ship construction in 2023 reached 64.08 million gross tons, an increase of 15.3% over 2022 (55.56 million gross tons).
In 2023, Chinese ships (ranked second in 2022) accounted for 18.9 percent of the total construction volume of 12.14 million gross tons, an increase of 3.5 percentage points from 2022 (15.4 percent), rising to the top of the ranking. In October 2019, China State Shipbuilding Corporation and China Shipbuilding Industry Corporation jointly restructured and established China State Shipbuilding.
South Korea's HD Hyundai (formerly Hyundai Heavy Industries), which ranked first in 2022, dropped 3.8 percentage points to the second place with a share of 14.5 percent in 2023. Its ship construction in 2023 was 9.27 million gross tons, 8.6 percent less than the previous year (10.14 million gross tons).
On the other hand, the Korean company that rose in the ranking was Hanwha Marine (formerly Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering), which rose to third place from fifth place in 2022.
Japanese companies fell out of the top five. Imaji Shipbuilding, which ranked third in 2022 with a 6.0% share, fell to sixth place in 2023. Although the construction volume of Imaji Shipbuilding has increased compared to 2022, it is still unable to catch up with the construction volume of Chinese and Korean conglomerates.
Global ship construction is expected to expand further in the future. According to the Japan Shipbuilding Industry Association, by the 2030s, the global demand for new ship construction will increase by about 60 percent from 2023 to 100 million gross tons. It is expected to remain at a high level thereafter.
In addition to the increase in maritime traffic, the demand for the renewal of environmentally friendly ships is also very strong. Ships built around 2010 will usher in a renewal period in the future, and the demand for new ships may continue to increase.
