The last of the 13,000 TEU series of LNG reserved container ships joins the HMM fleet
The container ship HMM Turquoise, owned by South Korean shipping company HMM, has completed delivery, realizing its collection of 12 13,000 TEU LNG reserved container ships (LNG-Ready).
The company announced the delivery of the vessel on November 27, 2024, stating that the ship HMM Turquoise is ready to begin its South Pacific Express (PSX) route.
The ship, built by South Korea's Hanwha Marine, has been fitted with an LNG reserve structure to prepare for future ships to be converted into LNG thrusters.
HMM Turquoise is the last in a series of 12 13,000 TEU LNG reserved container ships that HMM will place an order with Hanwha Marine and Hyundai Heavy Industries in 2021.
Under the contract, Hanwha Marine and Hyundai Heavy Industries shipyards will each be responsible for the construction of six vessels with advanced energy-saving technologies to improve energy efficiency and reduce pollutant emissions.
The first ship in the series, HMM Garnet, was built and delivered by Hyundai Heavy Industries in South Korea in January 2024.
Delivery of these vessels has been completed and HMM's fleet capacity is expected to reach a total of one million TEU. In particular, large container ships of more than 10,000 TEU will account for 80% of the total fleet, greatly improving the cost structure and operational efficiency.
The company has also recently leased two newly built 7,700 TEU LNG powered container ships from the Greek fleet Navios.
In addition, HMM plans to invest 23.5 trillion won ($17.48 billion) to achieve its sustainable growth target until 2030. To meet the market demand for environmentally friendly transport, the company aims to have nearly 70 or so green ships by 2030 and a carbon-neutral ecosystem across all transport systems by 2045.
