According to Helsinki: As reported by Finnish Broadcasting Company, on July 1st, Finland's ban on cargo ships dumping wastewater officially came into effect, making the country the first in the world to implement such a regulation.

    It was reported that the Finnish parliament approved the legislative amendment in December 2024. As of July 1 this year, cargo ships are not allowed to discharge toilet wastewater, sulfur-containing washing water and scrubber sludge into the coastal waters of Finland.

    This legislation specifically addresses the wastewater discharge from vessels with a gross tonnage of over 400 tons or vessels carrying more than 15 people.

    Previously, there were virtually no restrictions on the passage of cargo ships through this area - untreated sewage could be dumped into the sea 22 kilometers off the coast, while treated wastewater was permitted to be discharged within 5 kilometers of land.

    However, the ban includes a relatively long transitional period. For the next approximately five years, wastewater from sinks and showers can still be discharged into the coastal waters of Finland.

    The report indicates that the wastewater from toilets discharged by ships into the sea contains a large amount of intestinal bacteria and suspended solids, and also contains high levels of nutrients. These nutrients can cause water body eutrophication, thereby promoting the growth of algae, consuming oxygen and disrupting the marine ecosystem.

    Finland's actions have set a precedent for its neighboring countries. Sweden will take similar measures, while Denmark is also considering similar regulations.

    The Baltic Sea Action Group (BSAG) advocates for achieving broader protection throughout the Baltic Sea region through cooperation with international institutions such as HELCOM and the European Union.
